The Department of Theatre Studies was established in 1989, and first received students for the academic year 1992-1993. It was among the first Departments in the School of Humanities and Social Sciences at the University of Patras. The four-year degree granted by the Department is primarily theoretical in orientation, with special emphasis being given to the study of ancient Greek theatre.
The Department has at present fourteen regular faculty members, whose specialisations relate to ancient Greek theatre, modern literature and theatre, semiotics of theatre, history of cinema, musicology, and art history. During the 2003-2004 academic year it also has five adjunct instructors (on contract) on its teaching staff, three members on its special/workshop teaching staff, and one member for special technical and research support. There are currently approximately 300 undergraduate students enrolled in the Department. A postgraduate programme on ancient Greek theatre will be inaugurated pending official approval.
The Department of Theatre Studies is housed in the pre-fabricated buildings (former Medical School) near the main Administration Building (Building “A”). It has its own lending library and reading room. Books and Greek periodicals on theatre studies are kept in the Departmental Library, while international periodicals are found in the University Library.
